Levertov grew up in Ilford, a large town east of London, and emerged as a poet of influence early in her career. She moved to America and was influenced by the Black Mountain school of poetry but developed her own style. She received The Guggenheim Prize for this book, The Jacob’s Ladder, which explores the countryside and her religious identity as the daughter of an Anglican clergyman.
