This formative 1974 poetry collection was written by Sister Sonia Sanchez towards the beginning of her long career as an influential feminist poet, scholar and teacher.

In 1998 Sanchez wrote “For Sister Gwen Brooks” in her book Like the Singing Coming Off the Drums:

”...restringing her words/from city to city/so that we live and/ breathe and smile and/ breathe and love and/ breathe her/... this Gwensister called life”
