Harlow: Longman, 1986.

Signed first edition hardback. 401pp, final 2 pages blank, 8vo.

An A-Z of feminism from the mid-1980s, featuring notable names and terms with encyclopaedic entries for each item. In her introduction, Tuttle states the intention behind this book: “I believe there is a need for a general reference work, accessible to both the committed feminist and the pre-feminist reader alike.” The book is, of course, from a very particular perspective of 1980s feminism; this both makes this a fascinating reference point for a past-era of feminist thinking (the encyclopedia entry for “transexualism,” for example, cites notoriously transphobic Janice Raymond as an authority and mentions that “it is a subject which makes most feminists uneasy”). But this book should be taken as what it is - a portrait of a movement at a certain time.

Vibrant blue dustjacket. Dark blue cloth board with gold lettering on spine. Like new.
