This novel of youth, lesbian tension and repression gave its writer her name: its heroine is named Anna, and after writing this Kavan decided to take on that name herself. This lends an extra edge to the contents - how much are we supposed to believe this “Anna” really is the writer? This edition was reprinted by Peter Owen under the writer’s more well-known name, and was given a handsome dustjacket design by Keith Cunningham to match the publisher’s other Kavan editions.
